Suburban dinosaur discovered outside Melbourne
7th May, 2012
The presence of ceratosaurs in Australia has been confirmed after the discovery of a specimen outside Melbourne. This group was previously absent from the fossil record in Australia, despite the fact that Australia was still part of the super-continent Gondwanaland.
The ankle bone was found in 2006 by an amateur palaeontologist and despite being only 2.4cm wide has provided important information regarding the spread of these meat-eating dinosaurs throughout Gondwana (which subsequently split into Australia, Antarctica and India).
