Fossil Saved from Mule Track Revolutionizes Understanding of Ancient Dolphin-Like Marine Reptile

An international team of scientists have revealed a new species of ichthyosaur which revolutionises our understanding of the evolution and extinction of these ancient marine reptiles.

Ichthyosaurs were thought to have evolved continuously and rapidly during the Cretaceous in response to global changes but this relatively modern Cretaceous example has characteristics of species living much earlier in the Jurassic, evidence that this species at least displays evolutionary stasis, a very rare feat in the evolution of marine reptiles.
