2017 Fieldtrip to Morocco

Programme

This trip will be a combination of geotourism and the study of the diverse geology of Morocco, a country that holds many of the answers to the history of North Africa from the Precambrian in the south to the opening of the Strait of Gibraltar in the north. We will visit a tremendous mix of outcrops, working mines and beautiful landscapes.

Travel Day 1:

Option 1: 27/09/2017. Direct flight with BA/Iberia to Tangier from London. Arrival: Tangier 17.05. Hotel: Hotel Continental, The Old Medina, Tangier. 

Option 2: 25/09/2017. Outward journey via Gibraltar for those interested. Leave on 25th September for Gibraltar. Two evenings – 25-26 September on Gibraltar, Cross to Tangier via ferry from Algeciras or Tarifa on 27th.

Day 2: 28/09/2017. Visit Grottes D’Hercule and views of the Straits of Gibraltar town centre and historic monuments. Overnight Tangier. Hotel: Continental, Old Medina, Tangier..

Day 3: 29/09/2017. From Tangier across Tetouan Valley towards Azla studying Rif Mountain geology en-route with the emplacement of peridotites and the contact of the Sebtide Nappes over the Dorsale Calcaire and the geology of the Tirinesse Intramontane Basin. Cascades d’Akchour. Overnight Chefchaouen. Hotel: Casa Annasr, Avenue Magreb, Chefchaouen.

Day 4: 30/09/2017. Chefchaouen to Meknes via N13, Ouezzane the Roman city of Volubilis or Banasa and visit to the Gharb Centre of SDX Energy Morocco. Overnight Meknes. Riad Yacout, Place Lalla, Aouda 5000, Meknes.

Day 5: 01/10/2017. Meknes. Historic city and its environs. Geology of the Rharb Region of Northern Morocco. Overnight Rabat. Hotel: Farah Rabat, Place Sidi Maklouf, Hassan, Rabat.

Day 6: 02/10/2017. Rabat. Natural Science Museum and City Tour. Overnight Rabat. Hotel: Farah Rabat, Place Sidi Maklouf, Hassan, Rabat.

Day 7: 03/10/2017. Rabat to The Office Chérifien des Phosphates, Khouribga for an introduction to the geology and extraction of the regional phosphate series, their geology and commercial exploitation. In 2013 Morocco was ranked third in terms of global production. Overnight: Hotel La Kasbah d’Ouzoud, 22000 Ouzoud nr Beni Mellal, Morocco.

Day 8: 04/10/2017. Study of the regional geology of the Ouzoud area with visits to both the Cascades and Gorges of Ouzoud. Overnight: Hotel Restaurant La Kasbah d’Ouzoud, 22000 Ouzoud nr Beni Mellal, Morocco.

Day 9: 05/10/2017. Ouzoud to Imilchil and on to Tinerhir through the spectacular Gorges de Todra and Middle Atlas Mountains: Overnight in: Hotel Restaurant La Kasbah, No 69, Rue Dar Baroud Avenue Mohamed V, 45800 Tinerhir. Morocco.

Day 10: 06/10/2017. Visit to the SMI Silver Mine, near Imider on the northern flank of Djebel Sahro in the Anti Atlas. Overnight. Hotel Restaurant La Kasbah, No 69, Rue Dar Baroud Avenue Mohamed V, 45800 Tinerhir. Morocco.

Day 11: 07/10/2017. Tinerhrir to Zagora via Alnif and the truly, fantastic Draa Valley. ?Ordovician glaciation of Bou Ingarf mountain, Zagora-Alnif area. Overnight Zagora: Fibule du Draa Kasbash D’hôtes, Village Amezrou, 49500 Zagora.

Day 12: 08/10/2017. Zagora Region, desert terrain and a view of Dj Siroua Volcano. Overnight: Fibule du Draa Kasbash D’hôtes, Village Amezrou, 49500 Zagora.

Day 13: 9/10/2017. Zagora to Tazenakht and Marrakesh. Desert terrain and scenic road over High Alas to Tizi-n-Tichka Pass, Kasbah Anemiter and Kasbah Telouet. Overnight: Hotel Farah (Golden Tulip) Marrakech, Avenue Du President Kennedy, Hivernage, 40000, Marrakech. Morocco.

Day 14: 10/10/2017. Free Day. Overnight: Hotel Farah (Golden Tulip) Marrakech, Avenue Du President Kennedy, Hivernage, 40000, Marrakech. Morocco.

Day 15: 11/10/2017. Return UK via Marrakesh.

Estimated cost £1290.00 Bed and Breakfast. Based on sharing twin or Double room.
